backing and batting calculator

No more guessing (or running short!) when it comes to quilt batting and backing. This calculator helps you quickly work out how much fabric you'll need for your quilt backing — whether you're piecing it, using a wideback, or working with standard-width fabric. Just pop in your quilt size, and you'll know exactly what to cut and buy.

How to Use the Quilt Batting & Backing Calculator:

Step 1: Enter Your Finished Width and Length Quilt Dimensions. Select inches or centimetres using the dropdown menu.
Step 2: Select Your Backing Fabric Width from the dropdown menu.
Step 3: Set any Extra fabric allowance (the default is 4 inches)
Step 4: The Calculator automatically updates as you type.

The Results show you your finished quilt size and the required size, which includes the extra allowance. They also provide the exact dimensions to cut your battingand backing and a handy shopping list.

Special Features:

Real-time Updates - results update instantly as you change values.

Multiple Width Handling: The calculator tells you how many fabric widths to sew together if your quilt is wider than your fabric.

Pro Tips:
  • Always buy a little extra fabric for shrinkage and mistakes

  • Pre-wash your backing fabric before use

  • Consider the fabric direction when piecing multiple widths

  • 108" wide backing fabric eliminates seams for most quilts

The calculator does all the math for you - just enter your quilt size and start shopping!
