Whetū is a Māori word which means Star! Whetū is sometimes also used when referring to other celestial bodies, for example, comets. Stars were observed carefully by the Māori people, as they were important indicators of time and particular stars and star clusters were omens of aspects of life, including crop success¹. One popular whetū in New Zealand is Matariki. Matariki is one of a cluster of many whetū which are not visible all year long, and when it first appears before sunrise in the north-eastern sky, this indicates the beginning of the Māori new
year - about mid-June - and is cause for celebration!
